Leading industry group, NSW Land Lease Living Association (LLLIA), has welcomed the Albanese Government’s moves to cut red tape and open the door to building more manufactured homes.
Following the announcement by the Federal Treasurer of the $900 million National Productivity Fund, LLLIA CEO, Lyndel Gray, said the move will boost the cost-effective manufactured housing market.
“These homes offer flexibility, affordability and sustainability—qualities that are increasingly important in meeting the housing needs of our growing population,” Ms Gray said.
“We hope the state and territory governments take up the opportunity to streamline building approvals and remove red tape, fostering an environment that promotes efficiency and growth within the building and housing sectors.”
The Association commended the Treasurer, Dr Jim Chalmers, for the grants scheme as a positive step to address Australia’s lagging productivity, and praised the Hon. Ed Husic, Minister for Industry and Science, for his work in supporting the growth of the manufactured homes industry.
Lyndel Gray said she hoped the Federal Government’s efforts will pave the way for much- needed policy reform.
“Manufactured homes offer the potential for greater integration within residential land lease communities and other available land to support the growing housing market. For years we’ve urged the NSW Government to advance planning reforms for caravan parks and manufactured home estates,” Ms Gray said.
“A key aspect of these reforms includes removing the restriction in the Housing SEPP that prevents the development of manufactured home estates within the Sydney region. This restriction unnecessarily limits the availability of this important form of housing in the nation’s most critical housing market.
“While we support the intent behind the NSW Building reforms being led by the NSW Building Commission, it’s crucial that further efforts are made to preserve the benefits and efficiencies inherent in manufactured homes and land lease communities.
“We need a co-ordinated, all-of-government approach, with planning and building reforms developed concurrently. An integrated approach will ensure clear definitions and streamlined approval processes align to maximise efficiencies and preserve homeowners’ rights.
“Our industry looks forward to close collaboration with government bodies to facilitate these positive reforms. We are confident that by working together, we can achieve significant improvements that will benefit both the industry and the wider community.”
